Caterpillar boosts D6K dozer efficiency with machine control options

Caterpillar has boosted the operational efficiency of its D6K dozer in its latest update with an Eco Mode and a range of optional Cat Connect-linked enhancements to help fleets and operators get more grading work done in less contact time.

The D6K replaces the current D6K2, featuring the same proven Cat C7.1 ACERT engine with 97kW of power, but coming with a new Eco Mode that lowers engine speed, while maintaining ground speed, for 18% lower fuel consumption in lighter blade load applications like finish grading.

In terms of the Cat Connect Grade technologies now on offer, the first is Cat Grade with Slope Assist, which helps operators by automatically maintaining the blade angles – causing operators to finish up to 39% faster and with 82% less operator effort, while delivering up to 68% better surface quality.

Cat Grade with Slope Assist can be supported by Cat Stable Blade, which monitors blade movement and automatically adjusts raise and lower, in concert with the operator, while Cat Slope Indicate displays the machine cross slope and fore/aft orientation on the primary monitor.

For more complex design plans, the Cat D6K can be outfitted with optional Cat AccuGrade, which is a dealer-installed aftermarket grade-control system that uses a choice of sensors or signal receptors to help pinpoint the dozers location with even greater accuracy for even greater versatility.

Depending on the work, the system functions by adding: lasers for 2D flat-plane and slope work; Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) control for complex 3D cuts and contours; and/or systems using a Universal Total Station (UTS) for fine and finish grading.

Machines purchased with AccuGrade Ready Option allow for the easy installation of Cat AccuGrade 2D and 3D grade-control systems, for greater operational flexibility and resale value.

In the Gulf, Caterpillar is already seeing good uptake of technologies such as Accugrade as the result of efforts by Al-Bahar and Sitech Gulf to raise awareness through customer events and their sales, service and support teams.

The latest D6K also offers several unrelated features to help make the operator’s job easier, including an easy to read liquid crystal display that supports Slope Assist when ordered, and also acts as the optional rear camera screen, so that no additional monitor is needed.

Automatic Traction Control can also be added as an option to automatically reduce track slip in poor underfoot conditions, for improving productivity and finish surface quality under such conditions.

The hydrostatic transmission also offers the same manoeuvrability and steering response and ability to push full blade loads as the D6K2, but has an optimised undercarriage design that quickens and smooths finish grading.

As with all Caterpillar equipment, the Cat D6K comes with Product Link integrated into machines, enabling fleet operators to view real-time information on machine location, hours, fuel usage, idle time and event codes via the VisionLink user interface.
