Finnish overhead crane and lifting equipment specialist Konecranes claims to have introduced the world’s first hybrid reach stacker with its 45 tonne SMV 4531 TB5 HLT.
The SMV 4531’s diesel engine drives a generator, allowing it to operate at a constant speed and power output, the drive function is provided by direct electric traction motors, while dedicated electric motors power the hydraulic pumps for the lift and telescope etc… all of the electric motors are equipped with a regenerative mode, with energy generated from braking and load lowered stored for reuse.
The company claims the hybrid reach stacker is at least 30 percent more efficient, in terms of fuel consumption and emissions, compared to equivalent diesel powered machines, whilst providing improved performance, acceleration and response.
Ander Nilsson, technical director of Konecranes Lift Trucks, said: “Potentially, the diesel engine of the hybrid reach stacker could be replaced by another source of electrical energy, as technology and price allow. Such examples may be fuel cells or a form of energy storage – such as batteries - that can be recharged via a connection to the power grid.”
Vice president of Konecranes Lars Fredin added: “Our new hybrid reach
stacker is an exciting step forward for our industry and further proofs
that Konecranes is committed to offering its customers eco-efficient
products and services.
