Caterpillar has rolled out a variant of the D8R bulldozer that can operate in 20% higher ambient temperatures thanks to an increased cooling capacity, for even more consistent and reliable operation in high temperatures.
The model’s Cat C15 ACERT engine delivers 8% more engine power (242 kW at 1,900 rpm) than the previous D8R model, thanks to a more efficient powertrain, hydraulic fan and radiator configuration that increases its ambient temperature threshold.
The new D8R also finishes the job more quickly, with the powertrain and cooling system allowing the operator to bulldoze sand in second gear, even under hot desert conditions, increasing its dozing efficiency by up to 18%.
Equipped with the largest standard blade in its class at 10.3 m3, the dozer moves up to 13% more material per pass. The blade features high tensile strength steel construction and a strong box-section designed to stand up to the most extreme applications.
Beyond higher ambient capability, the D8R can be equipped with additional options to boost performance and increase service life in extremely sandy or abrasive applications.
These include a pre-cleaner turbine air intake system that prevents heavier-than-air particles from entering the system for longer air filter life, more efficient engine performance and lower maintenance costs.
Engine enclosure doors can also be added also reduce the amount of sand entering the engine compartment, enabling the dozer to run cleaner, and fan and radiator core protection coatings to allow these components to resist abrasion and increase their service life.
Sealed bottom guards to prevent the penetration of fine abrasive particles, replaceable wear plates for longer service life in abrasive applications and cab-mounted air conditioning condenser for improved system performance and enhances serviceability, can also be selected as options.
The field-proven, quiet and air-conditioned cab also has an integrated roll-over protection structure (ROPS) that provides operators greater all-around visibility to enhance safety and productivity.
Contractors can further increase productivity by opting for Caterpillar’s electro-hydraulic control systems, which reduces operator effort, while improving precision and efficiency.
The standard Cat Slope Indicate displays real-time machine cross-slope and fore/aft orientation, while the optional Cat Grade with Slope Assist automatically maintains established blade position to finish jobs faster, with better surface quality and significantly less operator effort.
