Expansion Projects for Manufacturing Program of Mining Trucks

In order to increase production capacity, the facilities in Newport News, VA (USA) are undergoing a major renovation. Between 2012 and 2015 a $45.4 million (€34.1 million) investment will be made in order to expand the factory, warehouse, and office space.

The choice to expand is a direct result of Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News Co. activities to develop new mining truck models. The goal is to increase production to a yearly capacity above 100 units for at least three models of mining trucks. In the beginning of 2014, the production of the new 240-ton T 264 mining truck will start in addition to the ongoing manufacturing program of the successful 400-ton T 284. The development of a third 320-ton capacity truck is also in progress.

In addition to bringing in new painting and machining equipment to the factory, the construction of buildings to manage shipping and improve material flow will be part of this project. The expansion also brings a new training center to the facility, as well as new office space to house manufacturing management, quality management, and other production support staff.

More than 150 positions are expected to be filled at Liebherr during this period, increasing the personnel to over 600 employees. Since this project will have such a positive effect on the region’s economy, both the city and state governments will contribute to these projects. On 19 February 2013, representatives from the Commonwealth of Virginia and the cities of Newport News and Hampton announced their contributions in the form of grants and incentives for transportation improvement, training, and property investment.
