At Bauma 2013, Wirtgen is exhibiting several new machines and
innovative technologies. Wirtgen cut its teeth in grinding and milling
machines before acquiring compaction equipment manufacturer Hamm. Now
they’ve cleverly combined the basic design of a concrete/asphalt milling
drum with a vibrating roller to create a “crusher drum” that destroys
the material underfoot while on the move.
The combination is on display at Bauma in the new H 25i VC compactor with crusher drum.
The applications the company claims for this hybrid technology include
breaking or pre-crushing rock, breaking up concrete road surfaces,
crushing and compacting mixed soils, compacting cohesive soils and
compacting during cold recycling, and stabilization.
The crusher drum uses the same bits as a milling machine but because the
drum vibrates it can destroy the material with a maximum point load of
50 tons of compaction force.
Wirtgen has also extended its oscillating compactor drum to the smaller sizes of Hamm rollers.
The oscillation motion of the drum compacts asphalt with a fore and aft
vibratory motion rather than an up and down oscillation. This reduces
the possibility of damaging surrounding structures with excessive
vibration to the ground and kneads the asphalt for a more consistent
density. (Source: equipmentworld.com)
