Landfills are among one of the most abrasive environments for workers, land and equipment. With hundreds of acres of land for the use of burying garbage, customers look for equipment that will accomplish the task of providing the greatest amount of compaction, longevity of equipment and up time.
The Orchard Hills Landfill, owned and managed by Advanced Disposal, buries an average of 1,600 pounds of municipal solid waste (MSW) per cubic yard and receives about 6,000 tons of MSW a day.The landfill uses Cat® compactors and dozers to move, compact and cover MSW brought in from the surrounding areas. The landfill is located on 450 acres in Davis Junction, Ill., and receives about 200 semi-trucks a day from transfer stations in surrounding areas.
Bruce Knapp, general manager of Orchard Hills Landfill, said he has been very pleased with the Cat equipment used at the landfill.
"This is a really harsh environment. We've got to have service and maintenance back up to run on a daily basis. Competitors can't follow up on service. With compactors, there's no comparison," Knapp said of the services received from his local dealer, Patten Industries Inc.
The landfill has three 836H Compactors, one D8T Bulldozer and one D8R Bulldozer. The D8R dozer recently went through a certified rebuild by Cat dealer Patten Industries Inc., which took about 12 weeks. Knapp said, "It was like getting a brand new machine back for half the price."
